Obituary of Charles Anthony O'Toole
Charles Anthony O'Toole, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday March 19, 2025 at his home in Horseheads, NY, surrounded by family. Born October 4, 1937, in Kingston, NY, to Austin P. and Dorothy R. (Cummings) O'Toole, he grew up in Albany, NY, and graduated high school from Vincentian Institute in 1956. After attending Case Western Reserve University and serving in the US Air Force, he graduated with honors from Northeastern University with a BS in Computer Science. He later earned an MBA in Quantitative Systems & Analysis from Long Island University. His first position in the field was as a Computer Programmer for Global Insurance Company in New York City. He then spent ten years with Singer Corporation, his last position being Manager of Information Systems. In 1980, he joined Hardinge Corporation as the Director of Management Information Systems and retired in 2004. He met his high school sweetheart, Carol Delaney, through her sister, Joanne. Chuck and Carol were married at St Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar, NY, on June 11, 1960. They have two daughters and five grandchildren. During their 65 years of marriage, they lived in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Long Island, South Carolina, and Upstate New York. Charles was predeceased by his father, Austin P., mother, Dorothy, sister Virginia, brother Austin E. (Alice), brother Richard (Peg), and nephews Michael and Timothy O'Toole. He is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Cheryl (Martin) Szalay and Karen (John) Furstoss; grandchildren Emma Szalay (Alexander Roberts), Adam Szalay, John Furstoss, Benjamin Furstoss, and Elise Furstoss; his niece Kathleen Jabs, and nephews Patrick and Daniel J. O'Toole. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joanne Murty, and nephews David, Michael, and Stephen Morrison.Chuck was always interested in aviation, boating, and cars. He enjoyed playing the piano and loved jazz music. He was an avid reader and was interested in American history, especially the Civil War period. The ocean was as special to him as it was to his mother. After retiring, he enjoyed photography, following the stock market, and Wednesday coffee times with his friends. He had a sharp wit that brought laughter to us all. Mostly, he enjoyed time with his family and was a proud husband, father, grandpa, and uncle.
The name O'Toole means, "A Mighty People." He fought valiantly against cancer and is mighty in our eyes.
A private family funeral will be held at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS, NY at the convenience of the family.
