Ronald R. Swartz Obituary

Ronald R. Swartz of Horseheads, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday July 19, 2026 at the age of 84. Ron lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, service, and an unwavering love for his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and dedication that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A lifelong resident of Horseheads. Ron spent many years at Winchester Optical where he became known not only for his dedication and professionalism, but also for the genuine relationships he built with customers and colleagues. He later fulfilled his dream of owning his own business by establishing Swartz Ophthalmic Service. Through his business, he worked alongside local ophthalmologists, providing expert service and guidance on ophthalmic instruments and equipment. Ron believed that the true measure of a life was found in serving others. He devoted countless hours to the Village of Horseheads, serving as both a Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor. He was actively involved in projects that enhanced the community he loved, including helping restore the historic Zim Bandstand and the iconic Horseheads horse statue. He also played a key role in bringing lights to the Babe Ruth baseball field, creating opportunities for generations of young athletes to enjoy the game. His passion for youth extended far beyond civic projects. Ron coached for many years and was a dedicated supporter of both Babe Ruth Baseball and Cinderella Softball. He believed that sports helped young people build confidence, character, and lifelong friendships, and he took great joy in encouraging them to succeed both on and off the field. For more than 35 years, Ron was a proud and active member of the Horseheads Kiwanis Club. Whether volunteering at community events, lending a helping hand to a neighbor, or quietly supporting a worthwhile cause, he gave of himself generously without seeking recognition. His life reflected a deep commitment to making Horseheads a better place for everyone.

Above all, Ron's greatest joy was his family. He shared nearly 50 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Bonnie Isaacs Swartz, whose love and partnership were the foundation of their life together. Ron was pre-deceased by his parents Vernon and Doris Swartz and by his sister Marilyn Swartz Horton. Ron is survived by his loving children Tammy (Dale) Aldrich, Greg (Sharon) Swartz, Jeff (Katherin) Swartz; his cherished grandchildren: Brandon(Karli) Swartz, Justin (Rachel) McCarthy, Casey (Danielle) Swartz and Brooke (Austin) Rue; two adored great grandchildren: Dawson and Everly; and his special companion, Suze Wallen. He leaves behind many extended family members, lifelong friends, former co-workers, and neighbors who will miss his steady presence, generous heart, and warm smile. Those who knew Ron will remember him as someone who was always willing to lend a hand, offer thoughtful advice, or share a laugh. He took pride in his work, found purpose in serving others, and believed that every person deserved kindness and respect. His legacy lives on not only through his family but through the countless lives he touched, the young athletes he encouraged, and the community he helped strengthen.

A Celebration of Ron's Life will be held at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS, NY at a later date. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Bonnie in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ron's name to a local youth organization such as Horseheads Babe Ruth, Horseheads Cinderella Softball, the Horseheads Kiwanis Club, or another charity that reflects Ron's lifelong commitment to serving his community.
