Obituary of Donald L. Brooks

BROOKS DR. DONALD L. JR. Age 87 of Elmira, NY passed away on Thursday July 21, 2016 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Don was born November 29 , 1928 in Elmira , NY the son of the late Dr. Donald L. and Anne Hewitt Brooks Sr. . He attended Horseheads High School . Don received his Bachelor's Degree from Syracuse University where he was offered a full scholarship to play basketball. While at Syracuse , he met his future wife , Norma Boyce , whom he married on December 28 , 1949. He graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse Medical School and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa . Dr. Brooks entered The U.S. Army in 1955 and was stationed in Seattle, Washington for two years . He returned to Elmira where he established his OB/GYN practice in association with Dr. Scott Howland. Dr Brooks later practiced with Dr. Timothy Sharlow for over 35 years continuing his long-time association with The Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Dr. Brooks was pre-deceased by his father Dr. Donald L. Brooks Sr. on March 3 , 1978 , his son Mark H. Brooks on May 2 , 1993 , by his mother Anne H. Brooks on April 30 , 1996, sister-in-law June Boyce Kenyon and niece Brenda Kenyon Caslin and her husband Lawrence "Bart" Caslin . Dr. Brooks enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Norma , playing golf and tennis , hunting and fishing , and spending time with his family and friends. Dr. Brooks was Member of The Board of Managers of The Arnot Ogden Medical Center from 1989 – 2000 , a Member of The Board of Directors of Chemung Canal Trust Company and a long-time member of The Elmira Rotary Club , Elmira Country Club , and The City Club. Dr. Brooks is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Norma Boyce Brooks ; his loving and devoted children Dean and Linda Brooks of Elmira , NY and Anne and William Bacon of Elmira , NY ; cherished grandchildren : Amber and Jim Rightmire of Elmira , NY , Eric and Megan Brooks of Elmira , NY , and Lydia and Michael Hackenberg of Dowingtown , PA ; 6 great grandchildren ; nephew Dennis (Karen) Kenyon ; great nephews : Jonathan Caslin of Ovid , NY and Nicholas and Kelli Caslin of Rochester , NY , several cousins , and many wonderful friends . Family and friends are invited to attend Dr. Brooks's Memorial Service on Friday July 29 , 2016 at 11 AM at The North Presbyterian Church 921 College Avenue Elmira , NY. The Rev. David M. Preisendanz will officiate. Dr. Brooks will be laid to rest next to his son Mark in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family .
