Obituary of Robert M. Karney

Robert M. Karney age 91 of Horseheads, NY passed away on Saturday December 23, 2023. He was born on Sunday April 17, 1932 in South Williamsport, PA the son of Earl and Sara Nutt Karney. His family moved to Elmira, NY in 1941. Bob was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy Class in the fantastic Class of 1950. He was proud to serve in The US ARMY during The Korean War where he saw action receiving the Combat Infantry Badge and attaining the rank of Sergeant-First-Class. Bob married his wife, Theresa A. Hockstaff Karney , on July 3, 1954 in St. Patrick's Church in Elmira, NY and she pre-deceased him on December 25, 2015. He earned his Business Degree from Elmira College in 1988 and was a CPIM certified by The American Production and Inventory Control Society. He was an officer with the local chapter of the Society. Bob worked for 34 years with Westinghouse Corporation in Horseheads, NY and 2 years with ISTC as a Foreman , Industrial Planner , and Buyer. After retiring from industry he worked 13 years at Soaring Eagles Golf Course . Bob and Theresa were devout Catholics and long-time communicants of St. Mary Our Mother Church where he served on The Parish Council for three years, Retreat Leader for 13 years, and Bingo caller for five years, and a Charter member of The Nocturnal Adoration . In addition to his parent and his beloved wife , Bob was pre-deceased by his brother Earl Karney Jr. and his two sisters Loretta Karney and Barbara Cesarini, and son-in-law Wes Stead. Bob and his wife were big fans of Syracuse University sports traveling far to attend events including two bowl games. Bob told people that he lived so long because he walked all his life (The Mall and Park) and Theresa and Bob enjoyed a super marriage and family. Bob was a devoted husband , father , and grandfather and cherished the time he spent with them. Bob is survived by his beloved and wonderful children: Michael and Nancy Karney of Horseheads, NY , Charles and Sheila Karney of Big Flats , NY , Karen Karney Dibling and Steven Dibling of Athens GA , Mary Lou Stead of Corning, NY, and Cynthia "Cindy" and Marty Sambroski of Elmira, NY ; 10 grandchildren , 16 great grandchildren , 2 special nephews Bobby and John Cesarini , and special niece Kathy Sawyer Jividen, and a host of caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mr. Karney's Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday December 30, 2023 at 9:30 AM at St. Patrick's Church Park Place & West Clinton Street Elmira, NY. Bob will be laid to rest with his wife Theresa in St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery in Horseheads, NY where Full Military Honors will be accorded Mr. Karney following Mass.
