Obituary of Richard N. Wardell
WARDELL , RICHARD N. Age 84 of Big Flats , NY died very unexpectedly on Sunday February 22 , 2015 at home. Richard was born August 30 , 1930 in Chicago , Illinois . Dick married his wife , Judy Kinter Wardell , on June 4 , 1960 and they would have celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary on June 4 , 2015 . He was a loving and dedicated husband who cherished his wife Judy. Dick was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother Robert Wardell . Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife Judy Kinter Wardell ; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law : Doreen (Mrs. Robert) Wardell of Chicago , Ill. , Rev. Father John Kinter of Washington , D.C. , Martha & Clyde Ward of Washington , D.C. ; several nieces , a nephew, and many caring friends . Dick received his Bachelor's of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology . He worked as a Physical Metallurgist with The U.S. Navy Weapons Plant in Washington , D.C. and became a patent examiner for The U. S. Patent Office in Washington , D.C. Dick received his Doctorate of Juris Prudence from George Washington University Law School in Washington , D.C. He began his career with Corning Inc. in 1961 and served as a Patent Attorney and Manager in the Patent Operations Department until his retirement in 1993. Dick became a Consultant as a Patent Attorney to Enviromnetal Products Division of Corning Inc. from 1993-1995. He represented Corning Inc. before The World Court for patent infringement against Japan and won a judgement for Corning Inc. Mr. Wardell was recognized on June 23 , 2011 for 50 years of service to Corning Inc. He was a very devout Catholic and communicant and president of The Parish Council of St. Patrick's Church in Corning , NY from 1970-1973 and had a communicant and was an Oblate of Mount Saviour's Monastery in Pine City , NY , and a volunteer for many parish and diocesean committees. Dick was very active in his community and served as a member of The Zoning Board of Appeals of The Town of Big Flats from 1976-1978 and was a member of The Planning Board of The Town of Big Flats and served as its Chairman from October 1978 to 2002 . He was a very active member of The Big Flats Lions Club and was named Citizen of The Year in 1991 , former chairman of The Southeastern Steuben United Way and a recipient of its Errol F. Shand Award , founder and former President of Community Progress founded in 1969 to help assist low-income residents obtain housing , former chairman and member of the board of directors for The Food Bank of The Southern Tier , co-ordinator for youth activities for The American Red Cross of Corning in the late 1960s , and a long-time volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Corning. His hobbies included traveling and he was an avid bird watcher traveling to many parts of the world to enjoy his hobby. A Memorial Service celebrating Dick's Life will be held at The Big Flats Community Center 476 Maple Street Big Flats , NY on Saturday February 28 , 2015 at 12 Noon with his brother-in-law Father John Kinter and Father John Mulligan officiating . Those wishing to remember Mr. Wardell may do so through memorial contributions to The Food Bank of The Southern Tier 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue Elmira Heights , NY 14903.
