Obituary of Smith B. Paulison

PAULISON , SMITH B. "SMITTY" Age 69 of Horseheads, NY passed away on Friday July 1, 2016 surrounded by his loving family and friends. Smitty was born on June 30, 1947 in Ithaca, NY the son of the late Smith G. and Barbara Bundy Paulison. He graduated from Ithaca High School and received his Associate's Degree from Corning Community College . Smitty received his Bachelor's Degree from Elmira College . He received his Master's Degree in Education from Elmira College and also received a Master's Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University. Smitty married his wife Joanne Bacalles Paulison on August 21 , 1971 and they would have celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary on August 21 , 2016. Smitty was a long-time member of The Horseheads Kiwanis Club . He was involved and devoted many hours to The Chemung County ARC , Chemung County Catholic Charities , The Horseheads Free Library Foundation , The Chemung County Library , and was the founder and a board member of The Chemung County Project for Bail Inc., a board member of Chemung County Legal Services , Inc. , Chemung County Community Services , Office of Social Ministry , Chemung County Welfare Rights . These were the organizations that Smitty was involved with for the betterment of the community and to promote social justice. Smitty retired as Operations Director at The Elmira Psychiatric Center . He was a member of NASW/ACSW . In addition to his parents , Smitty was pre-deceased by his sister Susan B. Paulison Pitts on December 9 , 1992 and his nephew R. David Pitts on November 8 , 2014 . He enjoyed many retreats at Mount Saviour Monastery over the years . Smitty loved his family and friends and treasured the time he spent with them . He enjoyed playing golf at Corning Country Club and trips to Aruba . Smitty will be dearly missed by many and he was truly a "Gentle Man". Smitty is survived by his loving and devoted wife Joanne Bacalles Paulison; his loving daughters and son-in-law : Sara Paulison of Ithaca , NY and Katie Paulison-Harris and Bobby Harris of Elmira , NY ; his nephew : Jeffrey Pitts of Buffalo , NY ; mother-in-law : Betty Bacalles of Horseheads , NY and formerly of Corning , NY ; brother-in-law and sister-in-law : Tony and Mary Bacalles formerly of Corning , NY; nephew ; Lee and Lindsay Bacalles and their daughter Olivia of Blue Bell , Pennsylvania; several cousins and many caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS , NY on Tuesday July 5, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM . Mr. Paulison's Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday July 6 , 2016 at 11 AM. Smitty will be laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads , NY.
