Obituary of Grace D. Sherman

SHERMAN GRACE D. Age 90 of Big Flats, NY passed away on Monday January 30, 2017 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center unexpectedly. She was born on May 21, 1926 on Armenia Mountain near Canton, PA the daughter of the late Ludwig Franz and Olive Mae Benson Denkenberger. She was pre-deceased by her husband Robert T. Sherman on July 27, 2001; her brothers and sisters-in-law: James Valentine Denkenberger and Cleo Denkenberger and Glenn and Herta Denkenberger; sister and brother-in-law: Pauline D. and Ronald J. Sherman, and Robert L. and Jeanine Denkenberger and niece Leslie Denkenberger. Grace is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth R. and Frances A. Decker of Big Flats , NY ; nephews Ronald J. "Ron" Sherman Jr. of Erin , NY , Mark & Cathy Denkenberger , Steve & Amy Denkenberger ; nieces : Carol Denkenberger ; several grand nieces , grand nephews , and cousins ; her extended family and neighbors Mark, Shelly,and Erin Fee Gould of Big Flats , NY. Grace had been employed by Artistic Card Company and by Ann Page Company before retiring. She was a homemaker and helped her father in her very early years to raise her younger brother and sister Robert and Pauline. Her mother Olive passed away when Grace was 10 years old. Olive, her mother had died giving birth to a son Gary during childbirth. Gary was adopted by a loving family in Cuyler , NY where they were living The family eventually lost touch with that family when they moved out West. Many years later (approximately 50 years) Grace's brother James while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany was sightseeing with his wife Cleo one day and happenned to see this young American soldier and struck up a conversation. In the course of their talk, James discovered that the young soldier was his brother Gary!! They remained in touch with each other from that time on. A few years later Grace (with her nephew Ron and friend Shelly) flew to California to meet with her brother Gary for the first time in many years. They remained in touch and Gary passed away a couple years ago. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS, NY on Friday February 3, 2017 from 12 Noon-2PM. Mrs. Sherman's Funeral Services will be held following calling hours at 2PM. Grace will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Robert in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY.
