Obituary of Alfred W. Miller

ALFRED WAYNE MILLER Age 92 a life-long resident of Breesport, NY passed away on Tuesday February 12 , 2019 . Al was born July 2 , 1926 in Breesport , NY the third son of the late Samuel and Neva Pearl Husted Miller. He was a Veteran of World War II serving his country with The U.S. Army from July 30, 1945 until his discharge on November 6, 1946. Al married his wife Kathryn Sherrer Miller on July 26 , 1946 and they built a home on Maple Street in Breesport. Al was a charter member of The Breesport Fire Department and a life-long member of The Breesport United Methodist Church. He was pre-deceased by his wife Kathryn on . Al is survived by his son Gary (Nancy) Miller and daughter Cheryl (Gene) Losey. Al was very proud of his granddaughters Dena (James) McMurty , Breanna Losey, Marissa Losey, and Jodie ( Brian) Sell . He cherished his time with his great grandchildren Trinity and Aislinn McMurty, Daniel and Elena Sell, Katie Losey, Isabella Ameigh , and Lillian Ameigh . Al is also survived by his brother Harry Miller of Horseheads,NY and several nieces nephews , cousins and a host of caring friends. Al went into business with the Pioneer Rotary gas station on North Main Street in Horseheads in 1954 . This was a time when a driver could get his car repaired without an appointment and a tire repair cost $1.50 . He was the first person in town to own a four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with a plow and included jumper cables for starting cars on a cold morning. He owned a succession of trucks for the next thirty years. His Rotary station became the first to pump one million gallons of gas in a single year. In 1973 he went to Winchester Optical Company to work in the machine shop. Always a very social person, he had a pot of coffee nearby and would often spend his break walking through the plant making sure he knew every employee by name. Al enjoyed the annual Christmas party and was invited back every year after he finally retired in 2009. Al was very proud of The Breesport Fire Department which had its start in 1949 with some older trucks and a donated tanker. The original members built the fire station on donated land in the center of town. It was a time when communities bonded together for a common need. All has been a member of The Breesport United Methodist Church all his life , seving on the board , helping with construction or snow removal. He enjoyed standing in the vestibule before and after services to chat with friends. He was a driver for Meals on Wheel for many years as he knew every back road in Erin. Al loved his family , cared deeply for his church , was proud of his town and never forgot a friend. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNEARL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS, NY on Monday February 18 , 2019 from 4-7 PM. Mr. Miller's Funeral and Committal Services will be conducted at the conclusion of calling hours with his nephew Rev. David Crandall officiating.
