Richard H. Smith - Faith Reflections Our father was a builder, and he lived this vocation and ethic in all aspects of his faith life. Of particular note, Dad loved to build with enduring quality and substances; strong, pronounced, unique in appearance, multifunctional, maybe even bold, in essences come to mind. From the smallest projects around home to his grandest endeavors and ideas, he had a signature impact that was recognizable as his very own. Now this vocational strength was not only attributable to the material, but in like manner, also was exhibited in his core values and relationships. You only need to take one look at the size and breadth of this family, and you recognize very quickly the hand of our father, grandfather, great grandfather in building this Smith clan. It was his unspoken intention that we be faithful and reverent to the Creator; strong in character and values of courage, compassion, patience, honor, loyalty, and commitment; and steadfast, to stand the test of time with a goal toward the eternal. And equally, to also be generous with our God given gifts and blessings, as he himself exemplified, in simply always being last to be served and directing the limelight to others. Although late in becoming a “practicing” Catholic, Dad lived the gospel in his leadership and love throughout all our lives. Getting us to and from Mass and religious instructions. Building us First Communion kneelers and consistently supporting complete reverence and respect for the sacraments, long before he converted himself. We never saw a conflict in the way we were raised and in Catholic teaching. Dad did not believe that one should “bury his talents” and loved to parley whatever God entrusted him with, to something bigger and better than what he started with, and for the benefit of others always in mind. I cannot help but envy the words I am sure our Lord is now bestowing on Dad, “well done good and faithful servant”. For all of Dad’s accomplishments and successes, we never saw him put himself selfishly first or try to take all the credit. He taught us to always look for someone to share recognition with in achievements, and equally, to confess our failings in setbacks, emphasizing our own accountability. Dad was a builder – with a passion for enduring quality, that he modeled with little self-recognition and in great pride as a man richly blessed. Ultimately, in reflection on his life, everything he promoted and the direction he led, was for the envisioned benefit of his most significant and enduring accomplishment, his beloved family. We love you Dad, may God Bless you and welcome you to eternal rest. And appropriately, in this year of St. Joseph, our spiritual father; St. Joseph Terror of Demons, especially as Dad’s intercessor, Pray for us. Amen
