Obituary of John W. Lind

LIND John W. "Jack" Age 80 of Big Flats , NY passed away on Monday September 5 , 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with leukemia. Jack was born July 24 , 1931 in Sewickley , PA the son of the late John N. and Virginia McGraw Lind . He grew up and was raised in Baden , PA . Jack attended Bucknell University and received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Grove City College . He worked for The Pennsylvania Railroad from 1954 to 1962 . Jack served his country with The U.S. Army from 1955-1957 with The 101st Airborne . He came to work for Corning Glass Works in 1962 . Jack married Carol Brownrigg Lind on August 22 , 1964 in St. Vincent de Paul's Church in Corning , NY. They recently celebrated their 47th Wedding Anniversary. Jack retired from Corning Inc. as Director of Transportation and Distribution after 31 years of dedicated service. He was a member and Past President of The National Industrial Transportation League and was awarded "Man of The Year" in 1991 . Jack was also a member and Past President of The National Freight Transportation Association and served as its Executive Director from 1993-2000. Jack was a member of The Corning Country Club since 1962 serving as President and was a member of the Board of Directors for several years . He chaired the committee to design and re-build the present Corning Country Club and volunteered at The Corning LPGA for many years. Jack was an avid outdoorsman and an Eagle Scout who enjoyed hunting , fishing , golf ,and especially enjoyed his time at Keuka Lake. He was a dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers ,Penguin ,and Pirates fan. Jack was a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads , NY . Jack is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carol Brownrigg Lind ; sons and daughters-in-law : John W. Jr. "Jay" & Heidi Lind of Charlotte , NC and Jeffrey P. & Tricia Lind of Syracuse , NY ; daughter and son-in-law : Jennifer L. & Michael Padulo of of Rochester , NY ; grandchildren : William Lind , Ben Lind , Clare Lind , Emily Padulo ,and Erica Padulo ; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law : Judie & Ed Merritt of Chattanooga , TN , Barbara & Carl Vallely of Elmira , NY , and Robert Brownrigg of Texas ; several nieces , nephews , cousins , and a host of caring friends . Jack's family would like to give special thank you to Debbie Jaynes with Hospice and 2-B at The Arnot Ogden Medical Center for their loving and compassionate care given to Jack. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 West Broad Street Horseheads , NY on Friday September 9 , 2011 from 4-8 PM . Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday September 10 , 2011 at 10 AM in St. Vincent de Paul's Church 222 Dodge Avenue in Corning , NY . The Rev. John De Socio will be the Celebrant of Jack's Funeral Mass . Jack will be laid to rest next to his parents in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning , NY . The family will provide their own flowers. Those wishing may remember Jack through memorials to Southern Tier Hospice 11751 East Corning Road Corning , NY 14830 , Catholic Charities of The Southern Tier 215 East Church Street Elmira , NY 14901 , or by an act of kindness by donating blood through The American Red Cross .
